Virus Meets Granny Shawl

Keeping with the theme of circles, I wanted to show you all a different type of project that begins with a circle: a shawl. I confess, this is my first time making a shawl. It’s still in progress, but as soon as I looked at the pattern, I knew I had to share it with you all.
If you look at the pattern, the first thing it tells you to do is to “chain 10 and slip stitch to the last chain from hook to form a loop.” This is exactly how you form a chain circle, which I demonstrated in the Crochet Classroom earlier this month. BUT this is a shawl. Not a hat or an infinity scarf. So, when you finish putting the double crochets into the loop, you DO NOT slip stitch to join the row in a circle. Instead, you just turn your work as normal, chain up, and start the next row. As you work through the row repeats, you will find yourself making more and more chain loops that add to the overall design of the shawl. This is a great example of using the chain circle throughout a project instead of just at the beginning.

I know this project looks fancy and complicated, but it’s really not. The only stitches you need to know how to do are the chain, single crochet, and double crochet (plus one slip stitch for the beginning chain circle). These are things I’ve already covered in the Crochet Classroom, and I’m confident you’ll be able to do this pattern. This is why I’m tagging it as a beginner. Just be careful counting your stitches and don’t feel bad if you have to rip out and redo parts of it. It’s all part of the learning experience. :)
